APPR compensation amounts in Canada, and the conditions attached to each
The figures are simple. The conditions decide whether they apply. Everything below is summarised from the Canadian Transportation Agency's public guidance, with links at the bottom.
The table
| Arrival delay | Large airline | Small airline |
|---|---|---|
| 3 to under 6 hours | $400 | $125 |
| 6 to under 9 hours | $700 | $250 |
| 9 hours or more | $1,000 | $500 |
Large airlines are those that carried at least two million passengers in each of the two preceding years. The CTA lists Air Canada (including Jazz and Rouge), WestJet, Sunwing, Air Transat, Porter and Flair as large Canadian airlines.
The conditions
- The disruption was within the airline's control and not required for safety.
- You were informed 14 days or less before the scheduled departure.
- You arrived at your destination 3 hours or more late.
- You claimed in writing within one year of the disruption.
The airline then has 30 days to pay, or to tell you why it believes no compensation is owed.
The three categories
| Category | Compensation? | Also owed |
|---|---|---|
| Within the airline's control (scheduled maintenance, choice of aircraft, staffing) | Yes | Assistance, rebooking, refund |
| Within control but required for safety (unforeseen mechanical problems, pilot or safety-system decisions) | No | Assistance, rebooking, refund |
| Outside the airline's control (weather, emergencies, security, labour, airport) | No | Rebooking or refund |
Rebooking rules worth knowing
For disruptions within its control, a large airline must rebook you free of charge on its next available flight; after 9 hours, on another airline; after 48 hours, on any airline or to a nearby airport. Small airlines rebook only on their own or partner flights.
Where the aircraft record fits
Whether a maintenance disruption was “required for safety” is the airline's claim. The aircraft's movements around your flight are a public record you can compare against it. The check below does that comparison and tells you plainly when the record does not support a claim.
Check what the aircraft actually did
Enter your flight number and date. We trace the aircraft recorded on your flight in FlightAware's records and email you a plain-English report within 48 hours. Free, for Canadian passengers. One of three verdicts, each with its limits.
